Aligning Software System Level with Business Process Level through Model-Driven Architecture

Abstract

Information systems are intended to provide organisations with a new way of sustaining themselves, by helping them manage their activities using innovative technologies. Information systems require aligned levels for maximum effectiveness. In this context, business and information technology (IT) alignment is an important issue for the success of organisations. This paper presents the first step of the proposed approach to align the software system level, modelled by a Unified Modeling Language (UML) class diagram, with the business process level, modelled by the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) model. A model-driven architecture approach is proposed as a means to transform a set of BPMN models into a UML class diagram. A set of transformation rules is proposed, followed by guidelines that help apply those rules.
